Stress is the most common obstacle to well-being in modern day life...
It's invisible and most of the time we go about our day-to-day tasks and challenges and learn to cope with stress along the way.
A certain amount of stress is beneficial because it can stimulate us to a level of optimal behavioural and cognitive performance. Short-term stress primes the brain for improved performance, keeping us alert and responsive.
However, individuals that experience prolonged or chronic stress suffer both emotionally and physically, with common symptoms including anxiety, altered sleep, and eating patterns, poor memory and lack of concentration, mood swings, feelings of unhappiness, depression, negative thinking, aches and pains and an increased susceptibility to illness. In some cases, individuals turn to an increased use of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes to cope.
The reality is there will always be situations that cause us some degree of stress and discomfort; Hypnotherapy is a very effective way of relaxing the body and allowing the mind to return to a state of calm. It can teach you to pay attention to your body, so you experience the difference between feeling highly stressed and being calm and centred. You can build relaxation skills and an increased sense of self-regulation.
Simply knowing you have the ability to relax deeply and reorganise your thoughts and feelings can have a powerful effect in helping you better manage stress.
